How to wear cufflinks
- Pinch the cuff of your shirt’s sleeves together so that the insides are “kissing” or pressed together.
- Insert the cufflink all the way through both holes on the cuff of the shirt.
- Depending on the style of the cufflink, secure it on the backside of the cuff, and there you have it!

Cufflinks might be traditionally associated with men’s semiformal evening wear (the tuxedo ensemble), but the versatile little fasteners can fill a surprising range of wardrobe roles. So long as you’ve got a long-sleeved shirt with the requisite holes in the cuff, you can work cufflinks into just about any outfit.
Cuff links can be great, and they can certainly be worn without a jacket. But I don’t think cuff links are going to look good if you’re wearing casual pants or sneakers or Timberlands. You should still look dressy, even if you’re not in a jacket and tie.
You know it’s a standard dress shirt because of these two buttons on the cuff. You want to remove the buttons. Your cufflink will go through all four layers of your shirt, however, as it is now, there is only one button hole.
Not only are cufflinks brilliant for accessorising a casual outfit, cuff bracelets are too. Whether you prefer copper, silver, gold or a combination of all three, teaming your cufflinks with your bracelet can add interest to your casual wardrobe.
Double/French cuff shirts are the most common and classic option to wear with cufflinks. They are a type of dress shirt that features extended cuffs that fold back onto themselves to create two layers.
As a gentleman, you should regard cufflinks highly. Because cufflink symbolizes power, reputation and wealth, you should choose only luxury gemstone cufflinks when you want to buy them to be worn by you or to be a special gift for someone you respect.
The question when cufflinks should not be worn is easy to answer; only at funerals no one should wear cufflinks and everyone should be dressed as low key as possible. Watches, cufflinks, and any other kind of jewelry should absolutely stay home, that day.
Can I wear French cuffs without a jacket?
I’ve recently noticed several of my colleagues wearing French-cuff shirts without jackets or ties as part of their business-casual outfits. French cuffs are a dressed-up look. It’s fine to work in your shirtsleeves, but when you hit the streets your French cuffs should be peeking proudly from under your jacket cuffs.
First, fasten the studs to your tuxedo shirt. Next, attach your cufflinks to both cuffs on your shirt (see “How to Wear Cufflinks,” above). Then, slip on your vest and jacket. Finally, tug gently on both cuffs so they align with – or slightly extend beyond the length of your jacket sleeves.
The watch should match the hardware of your cufflinks and studs. In other words, if your cufflinks have a yellow gold border and backing, you can wear a yellow gold watch provided it’s understated. You can also match the metal of your timepiece to other metal on you such as any rings you wear, your eyeglasses, etc.
